ROADRUNNERS PLACE 2nd AT NJAC CHAMPIONSHIPS

BROWN TAKES 400-METER DASH TROPHY

Pomona, NJ:  Sophomore Shaquan Brown (Paterson, NJ) placed 1st in the 400-meter dash at the 2008 NJAC Championship Tournament held today at Richard Stockton College.  Brown clocked in at 48.88 in the finals earning ten points for the Roadrunners.  His mark qualifies him for the 2008 ECAC Championships and breaks the previous school record.  Brown fell just .38 short of qualifying for the NCAA Championships.

On Brown's heels was fellow teammate Jake Stass (Westwood, NJ) who ran a personal best earning a 2nd place finish, and eight points for Ramapo, in 49.27 seconds.   Josh Simmons (Hackensack, NJ) earned four points for Ramapo with a 5th place in the same event.  The junior crossed the finish line in 49.77 seconds.  Both qualify for the ECAC Championships with their marks.

Carlos Amarilla (Bedminster, NJ), Chris Zeigler (Ridgewood, NJ), and Matt St. Germain (North Arlington, NJ) placed 3rd, 4th, and 5th respectively in the 100-meter dash finals combining for 15 Roadrunner points.  Amarilla clocked in at 11.02 while Zeigler crossed the finish line in 11.04 and St. Germain in 11.19 seconds.

Zeigler also earned a 2nd place ribbon in the 200-meter dash in 22.44 seconds for eight points while sophomore Kyle Price (Milltown, NJ) placed 6th in both the 800-meter and 1,500-meter runs.  Price crossed the finish line in 2:00.16 while finishing the 1,500-meter run with a personal best time of 4:05.60.  Steve Logan (Sayreville, NJ) also posted a personal best in the 1,500-meter for 7th place in 4:07.34.

Ramapo's Jared Washington (Roselle, NJ) earned 4th place and five points for the Roadrunners in the 110-meter hurdles while Evan Shaker (Clifton, NJ) also placed 4th for five points in the 400-meter hurdle event.  Washington clocked in at 15.02 seconds and Shaker crossed the line in 54.81, a school record, and just .31 off the NCAA Provisional qualifying time.  Washington placed 2nd in the triple jump in 13.55 meters, qualifying for the ECAC Championships, with the school record mark.

Ryan Kopp (Washington Twp., NJ) placed 3rd in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a personal best time of 10:16.04 and Andrew Capizzi (Paramus, NJ) came in right behind Kopp in 10:24.47, his own personal best, for a 4th place ribbon.

Ramapo's 4x400-meter relay team, consisting of Stass, Simmons, Shaker, and Brown, finished in 1st place overall earning ten points for the Roadrunners.  They clocked in in a combined 3:18.64.

Tim Thorne (Hasbrouck Heights, NJ) hit 1.85 meter in the high jump for a 4th place ribbon while Washington placed 2nd overall in the triple jump with a 13.55 meter mark.  Rookies Brendan Gareffa (Hasbrouck Heights, NJ) and Anthony Farelli (Parsippany, NJ) placed 3rd and 4th respectively in the javelin.  Gareffa hit a personal best and ECAC qualifying 53.12 meters, while Farelli hit 52.25.  The two earned six and five points respectively for their team.

The Roadrunners combined for 143.50 points on the day earning a 2nd place finish overall, falling just 44 points behind defending champions, TCNJ (187.50).  The Roadrunners had a dramatic improvement from their 2007 outing.  The team placed 5th in 2007. 

Head Coach Mike Jackson was named the 2008 Outdoor Track and Field NJAC Coach of the Year.  This is the second time this academic year that Jackson has been awarded the honor.  He earned Coach of the Year honors for leading his 2007-2008 indoor track and field team to a 2nd place finish at the indoor championships.
