BASEBALL SEASON REVIEW

The Ramapo College baseball team finished their season standing at 21-18 overall, 9-9 in the New Jersey Athletic Conference. After falling short in the NJAC Tournament, the team qualified for the ECAC Championship Tournament capturing their third straight title with a 9-6 win over Stevens Institute of Technology.

The Roadrunners' season started on March 6th at Virginia Wesleyan in Norfolk, VA. Ramapo fell in their opener, 5-10, before bouncing back to defeat Lynchburg on the road, 8-5 in ten innings.

Ramapo headed to Florida for Spring Break going 5-5 before heading back to New Jersey. The Roadrunners defeated Amherst, 11-10 before splitting a double header against Albright the following day, 3-5 and 5-4. They defeated McDaniel, 10-8 and Ripon 6-5 in 12 innings. They dropped two games against Suffolk, 0-5 and Edgewood, 5-11 before splitting a double header against Bowdoin, falling 2-9 and winning the second 9-5. In their final game they fell to Westfield State, 13-14 in ten innings.

In their first NJAC game of the 2009 season, the Roadrunners split a road double header against William Paterson University, 8-7 and 4-8. In their home opener, the Roadrunners defeated St. Joseph's, 11-1 before they fell to Western Connecticut State, 3-4. They defeated NJAC rival Rowan on the road, 9-7, before splitting with Montclair State, 15-8 and 2-8. Ramapo dropped three straight NJAC games to Stockton, 3-5, Rowan, 4-7 and TCNJ, 3-8, before bouncing back with a home double-header sweep of Lehman, 3-0 and 11-0.

On April 15th they defeated John Jay, 10-2, before coming from behind late in the game to take a 10-9 game from Stockton at home on April 16th. Rutgers Camden defeated the Roadrunners, 2-3 before they swept NJAC rival New Jersey City, 15-1 and 11-6. Kean handed Ramapo two losses, 3-11 and 3-13 on the road. Ramapo defeated Rutgers Camden, 15-7 and avenged an earlier season loss to TCNJ by shutting the Lions out, 3-0. Needing one win to secure a spot in the NJAC playoffs, Ramapo split with Rutgers-Newark in their final conference games of the season, 7-11 and 5-2 on Senior Day. With a 9-9 NJAC conference record, the Roadrunners were awarded the fifth seed in the 2009 NJAC Tournament. They fell to #2 Montclair State on the road, 1-3, before falling in another close game to #6 Rowan, 2-3.

With a record of 19-18, Ramapo was awarded with a #3 seed in the 2009 ECAC Division III Metro Championship Tournament. The Roadrunners were on the road against #2 United States Merchant Marine Academy. They came away with a 7-2 victory and would be on the road against #4 seed Stevens Institute in the Championship game as the home team on May 9th. The Roadrunners defeated the Ducks, 9-6, to take home the 2009 ECAC Championship Title, their third straight.

Junior Joey Cacchiola (Union, NJ) led the team with a .406 batting average (56-138) while also scoring a team high 35 runs and 30 RBI. He led the team with eight doubles, four triples and 20 walks. Senior David Deredita (Clark, NJ) posted a .349 batting average (53-152) while scoring 34 runs and knocked in 24 RBI. He ripped five doubles and one triple while earning 19 walks, and was 5-6 in stolen bases. Senior Tim Gaven (Union, NJ) recorded a .325 average (27-83) with 14 runs scored and was second on the team in RBI with 27. He ripped five doubles and one home run.

Rookie Joseph Della Serra (Cranford, NJ) was third on the team with a .327 average (35-107). He scored 18 runs and knocked in 19 RBI while ripping five doubles and one home run. Rookie Daniel Mauriello (Monroe, NY) led the team with four home runs. He posted a batting average of .373 while scoring 12 runs and knocking in 15 RBI.

Tim Hannes and Michael Murano helped pace the Roadrunners on the mound during the season. Hannes posted a 4-3 record with nine appearances and seven games started. In 49.2 innings pitched, he struck out 32. Murano posted a 3-2 record with 11 appearances and eight games started with one shut out coming against TCNJ in a complete game, 3-0. In 52 innings pitched he posted 43 strikeouts and only 17 walks.

Head Coach Rich Martin returns all but five to the 2008 roster. Congratulations and good luck to seniors Gino Gallagher, Dave Cahoon, Tim Gaven, David Deredita, and Mike Manges.
