Mahwah, NJ: The men’s volleyball team played host to Division II, University of New Haven, tonight at the Bradley Center posting a 3-0 (30-15, 30-21, 30-18) sweep over the Chargers to improve to 19-8 overall. The University of New Haven falls to 5-12 with the loss.
The Roadrunners earned a game one victory, 30-15, behind six kills and two digs from rookie
Steve Vahalla (Bloomfield, NJ). After a 2-2 tie, Ramapo strung together points to go up, 21-9 with a kill from rookie
Kevin Froehlich (Ringwood, NJ). Ramapo out scored the Chargers 9-6 to close out the first game up by 15. Senior setter

Kurt Backlund (Old Bridge, NJ) led the team’s defense with five digs. Ramapo combined hitting .44 with 15 kills and only three errors on 27 attempts. New Haven’s Peter Kazlas (Allentown, PA) led the offense with three digs and Ryan Earl (Greenville, NY) contributed four assists in the game one loss.
The two teams traded points in the second game until 11-11 when Ramapo again strung together points until earning a five point lead at 20-15 with an attacking error on New Haven. The team’s biggest lead came at the final point of the game, nine, with a kill from sophomore
Paul Konopacki (Monroe Twp., NJ), taking the game, 30-21. Ramapo combined for 15 kills with eight errors on 29 attempts hitting .241, while New Haven hit .139 in the loss with 12 kills and seven errors on 36 attempts. Elvis Cabrera (Clifton, NJ) added three kills and two blocks to the set.
In the final game of the night, Ramapo pulled away quickly for a 23-13 lead, when New Haven's attacking error put the Roadrunners up ten. New Haven scored back-to-back points to close the gap, but a serving error quickly put the ball back in Ramapo's hands. The Roadrunners closed out the game with a 6-3 run to earn the 3-0 sweep and the 30-18 game three win. Cabrera, Vahalla, Konopacki, and
Josh Castillo (Garfield, NJ) each posted three kills in the game and Scott finished with 14 additional assists. Ramapo posted 14 total kills and New Haven tallied ten in the game. Ramapo hit .478 and New Haven hit .032 in the game. Gregg Brisbin (Richland, NJ) led the Chargers with four kills and Earl chipped in ten assists.
On the night, Vahalla recorded a team high 11 kills and Froehlich added eight, while Cabrera chipped in eight kills of his own. Konpacki went 9-13 with one errors hitting .615 while the team hit a combined .380 on the night. Scott wrapped up the match with 41 assists and Backlund led the defense with nine digs.
New Haven's Kazlas led the way with ten kills and Earl finished the night with 24 assists. The team hit .061 with 29 kills and 23 errors on 99 attempts.
The Roadrunners return to action when they travel to Princeton University on Saturday, April 3rd at 7:00 PM.
