2010 Baseball Season Review

20-18 Overall, 7-11 NJAC

The Ramapo College baseball team finished their 2010 season standing at 20-18 overall, 7-11 New Jersey Athletic Conference, earning the #8 seed to the 2010 ECAC Metro Baseball Championships.

Ramapo traveled to Winter Haven, Florida for the 2010 RussMatt Baseball Invitational, where the Roadrunners came home with a 5-5 overall record. They defeated Husson, 5-2 to open the season but fell to MCLA, 6-9 before defeating Fitchburg in a double header, 11-9, 17-2. Ramapo fell in back to back games to UMass Boston, 7-9 and Endicott, 9-11 before picking up back-to-back 13-1 wins over SUNY Cobbleskill and Albright. Ramapo fell in their final two games in Florida to Suffolk, 4-14 and Worcester State, 3-4.

In the Roadrunners' first six games back from Florida they saw wins over St. Joseph's Brooklyn, 11-1 and NJAC foe New Jersey City University, 13-2. They fell to NJAC rival William Paterson, 1-5, TCNJ, 2-14, and a tough 11-inning game, 1-4, FDU-Florham, 5-10 and on the road against William Paterson, 5-7. Ramapo bounced back with three straight wins, two in NJAC play. They defeated Rutgers-Newark, 15-14 in seven innings while sweeping NJAC foe, Stockton, 10-4 and 16-7 before defeating non-conference rival John Jay, 14-8. Montclair State handed Ramapo a touch 4-3 loss before they defeated Baruch, 16-11.

Ramapo got swept by Kean on the road, 1-11 and 2-8 before they defeated Western Connecticut State, 13-2 which started a five game winning streak. They defeated St. Joseph's (LI), 9-6, NJAC rival Montclair in a key conference game, 8-7, Lehman, 17-4 and they split with NJAC rival Rowan at home on senior day, 7-6 and 6-8. The Roadrunners defeated New Jersey City, 14-8 before falling in three straight conference games. They fell to Rutgers-Newark, 10-22 and got swept in a double header by Rutgers-Camden in the final conference games of the season, 5-11 and 3-13 in seven innings. The Roadrunners won their final two games of the regular season over Centenary (NJ), 4-3 and 8-7. The Roadrunners earned the #8 seed in the 2010 ECAC Metro Baseball Championship and would travel to #1 FDU-Florham. The Roadrunners, the 2007-2009 ECAC Champions, fell to the Devils, 13-11 to close out the 2010 season.

Ramapo saw much individual success on the diamond this season. Sophomore Dan Moreno (Cranford, NJ) led the team with a .415 batting average as he pounded out a team high 59 hits on 142 at bats. He ripped 16 doubles and five home runs while scoring 34 runs and knocking in 37 RBI. He also recorded 296 putouts and 13 assists. Senior Joey Cacchiola (Union, NJ) a recorded a .399 batting averaged, 57-143 while he scored 34 runs and knocked in 34. He ripped 11 doubles, three triples and three home runs while recording 17 put outs and 47 assists; he also scored seven stolen bases (7-8). Junior Nicholas DiGirolamo (Dumont, NJ) posted a .356 average, as he was 31-87. He scored 25 runs while knocking in 20 RBI. Rookie Michael Hansford (Hillsborough, NJ) posted a .396 average (38-96), third best on the team; he scored 23 runs while knocking in 20 RBI. He recorded seven doubles and two home runs. Rookie Christian Spurr (Warren, NJ) was 42-112 with a .375 average; he scored 27 runs and knocked in 32 RBI while hitting nine doubles and three home runs. On the mound, rookie Travis Zilg (North Caldwell, NJ) led the team with 45 strikeouts in 45.0 innings pitched with a 5.00 ERA. He made 15 appearances and seven games started while recording two saves. Rookie PJ Cerreto (Paramus, NJ) made 14 appearances on the mound with a 3.32 ERA in 40.2 innings pitched. He struck out 40 batters while opponents only earned a .194 batting average against him.
