Wenham, MA. -- Sophomore
Rob Santaniello (Oakland,NJ) netted thelone goal in the men's soccer season opener today earning a 1-0 victory over Gordon College. Santaniello struck on a breakaway in the 28th minute and that goal stood up for the rest of the way.
Frehsman goalkeeper Alex Sosler made a diving save in the 7th minute to hold off Santaniello, but in the 28th minute, a long punt from rookie netminder Benjamin Rueter (Wanaque,NJ), which was flicked to Santaniello from
Jonathan Yazo(Cliffside Park, NJ), was too much for the rookie goaltender. Santaniello put away his first goal of the season at 27:35. The FIghting Scots recovered to outshoot the Roadrunners 8-5 in the first half, but the lone goal, scored by Ramapo, was tabbed as the game winner.
Early in the second half Gordon had their best opportunity of the match when Matt Horth volleyed a hard shot from within the box. The shot beat Reuter, but Roadrunner defender,
Brett Tracey (Mahwah, NJ) made a diving deflection before the ball crossed the white line.
The Fighting Scots continued to outshoot their opponent for the remainder of the second half, but were unable to breakthrough. The match ended with Gordon holding an 18-10 advantage in shots and an 8-4 majority in corner kicks. Reuter posted five saves, while Sosler made three.
Santaniello was the player of the match for Ramapo as he compiled all four of the team's shots on goal.
Robert Nalesnik (Wayne, NJ) contributed two shots while the remainder were scattered among four other Roadrunners. Gordon was led by Kellen Kasiguran and Andrew Vandervoort (three shots apiece), while Noah McGarr and Matt Horth both fired two shots each.
Gordon (0-1) will return to action on Saturday in another non-conference matchup with Framingham State, 2:30PM in Wenham while Ramapo (1-0) hosts Western New England College at 1PM on Saturday.
